PeaceMakers 2009-1010 Accomplishments

February 2009 - PeaceMakers presented their first report on youth to the mayor, police department, schools, and community. (Out of that exercise the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council was created. It also brought an invitation for PeaceMakers to advise the Akron Police Department on youth issues)

April 2009 - PeaceMakers were hosts at the City of Akron’s Global Youth Service Day (Greeting, ushering and providing food service to guests during the annual youth volunteer recognition program)

May 2009 - PeaceMakers cleaned up Joy Park during Keep Akron Beautiful Week

May 2009 - Neighbors Day Akron, PeaceMakers joined their program coordinator, Willa Keith, traveling all over Akron meeting people and taking photographs to document activities

June 2009 - PeaceMakers become advisors to Akron Police Department

August 2009 - PeaceMakers assisted at 13 National Night Out sites citywide

August 2009 - PeaceMakers Hosted "Healing" event at Firestone Park Community Center in conjunction with National Night Out with more than 200 residents attending

August 2009 - PeaceMakers held their first Teen Expo at Lock 3. More than 750 youth attended

October 2009 – PeaceMakers facilitated two Red Ribbon Week assemblies at area middle schools promoting their anti-drug/anti-violence message.  Many of the students attending also signed pledge cards to stay drug and violence free

October 2009 – PeaceMakers provide a "Safe Halloween Trick or Treat" for kids at special U.S. Air Force Academy/Youth Symphony Concert at Firestone High School

December 2009 – PeaceMakers enjoyed an evening at LaserQuest!

December 2009 – PeaceMakers participate in the Victim Assistance Program Angel Tree Ceremony, at the Oliver Ocasek Building, reading names of many of the 600 local victims of crime (link to letter)

December 2009 – PeaceMakers assist the Mayor’s office in greeting and providing refreshment to elementary school students and their parents during the Mayor’s annual Art Reception

December 2009 – Held first middle school dance for Goodyear & Hyre Middle School

December 2009 – PeaceMakers joined Victim Assistance in delivering baskets to families of crime victims in the Akron Area

January thru March 2010 – Ten PeaceMakers participated in and completed various trainings at the American Red Cross of Summit County

February 2010 – PeaceMakers elect officers and executive board

February 2010 – Female PeaceMakers attended The Women’s Endowment Fund of Akron Community Foundation’s annual tea party at Portage Country Club where they learned about philanthropy and the value of giving

March 2010 – PeaceMakers helped host a reception sponsored by the Akron Bar Association for funders and winners of the City of Akron Holocaust Memorial Commemoration Arts & Writing Contest

April 2010 – PeaceMakers for the second year were hosts at the City of Akron’s Global Youth Service Day (Greeting, ushering and providing food service to guests during the annual youth volunteer recognition program). PeaceMakers’ president Dominique Council was a speaker on the program

April 2010 – Four Akron PeaceMakers were invited by Akron International Institute to host two visiting dignitaries from Palestine and Seychelles (an island country in the Indian Ocean) who wanted to know about the PeaceMakers history, purpose, and volunteer service to the community

April 2010 – Participated in the day-long Akron Police Explores annual competition in Wakeman, Ohio. PeaceMakers acted as crime victims, perpetrators, witnesses, attorneys, and other individuals in crime situations

May 2010 – PeaceMakers hold their first Parent Reception. They also honored graduating high school seniors. Seventeen PeaceMakers graduated with all going on to higher education

May 2010 – PeaceMakers sponsor their second middle school dance at the former Central-Hower High School Building

May 2010 – A new class of 13 join the ranks of the Akron PeaceMakers

May 2010 – PeaceMakers assist in the 4th Annual Neighbors Day Akron event

June 2010 – PeaceMakers facilitated their second meeting of international guests, hosting four visitors from the African country of Kenya. The topic of discussion was conflict resolution and how the PeaceMakers deal with issues with their peers

June 2010 – 50 members of the PeaceMakers and their families travel to Sandusky, Ohio and enjoyed a day at Cedar Point

August 2010 – Members of the PeaceMakers distribute flyers for Woodlawn United Methodist Church for their National Night Out event

August 2010 – PeaceMakers assist community organizations at 14 National Night Out sites around the city of Akron

August 2010 – A new class of 20 join the ranks of the Akron PeaceMakers.

August 2010 – PeaceMakers host international guests from Lithuania, Sweden, Ukraine and Romania. The topic of discussion was the history of the Akron PeaceMakers program and how they make a difference in their schools and community

August – PeaceMakers assisted Akron Police and University of Akron Police in distributing anti-crime materials to residents in the University Park area

August 2010 – The PeaceMakers host their 2nd Teen Expo at Lock 3 Park, recording artist, Karina Pasian entertained

August 2010 – Akron PeaceMakers has booth at the first Summit for Kids event at the John S. Knight Center and members are featured in the teen fashion show
